ALEXIS II: Autonomous Learning System

A true autonomous learning system, ALEXIS II incorporates a trainable control system for multi-task robots. The unique feature of this software is that it enables robots to learn procedures and skills directly from human users while maintaining a social contact with them. This eliminates the need to program robots for specific tasks, which dramatically cuts costs. ALEXIS II software provides users with an easy way to train robots to perform a wide range of assignments without the need to program or configure the robots. The ALEXIS II learning system enables robots to be trained the same way you train pets at home.

Software analyzes the user's gestures, looks at the objects presented by the user, listens to sounds and uses trial and error to make sense of what needs to be done. Behaviors learned in this way are associated with the stimuli provided by the human trainer. After a few sessions, the robot refines its understanding of the domain, the procedures and skills required to serve the user.

Applications: Industry, Home, Health

CURTIS I and CURTIS II: Tutorial Response Systems in Mathematics and Language Arts

Learning with CURTIS helps students in grades 1 through 6 succeed by providing individualized attention and immediate feedback. Teachers in differentiated classrooms struggle to provide students with the time and attention that they need to master course content. Students in classrooms where CURTIS is available stay engaged and on task while the teacher attends to other individuals.

CURTIS is integrated with a computer-based content curriculum and assessment package in mathematics and language arts. CURTIS checks for understanding in combination with reading assignments (CURTIS can also read text to students who struggle with reading). While students take assessments, they can ask CURTIS for hints. If the student gives an incorrect answer, they receive immediate feedback and encouragement to keep trying. If the student returns to a question after giving an incorrect reponse, CURTIS reorganizes the pattern of possible answers in random fashion. Once the correct answer is selected, students can access an optimal step-by-step approach to reach the correct answer.

Assessment is not based solely on the percentage of the questions answered correctly the first time; students who keep trying until they get the right answer get partial credit.

Applications: Elementary Education, Home Schooling
